Humboldt Habitat for HumanityHUMBOLDT HABITAT FOR HUMANITY, INC. is a non-profit faith based organization which builds homes for low-income people who live in sub-standard conditions. The philosophy of Habitat is that the economically disadvantaged need capital, not charity, co-workers, not caseworkers, in order to obtain a decent home in a decent community. WHO BUYS THE HOMES? Humboldt Habitat has a carefully appointed Family Selection Committee made up of volunteers and board members. The families are selected according to financial need, current inadequate housing and ability to make house payments. They must be willing to put in 500 hours of "sweat equity" on their own home and /or another Habitat project. HOW HABITAT WORKS… The capital for building comes from gifts and no-interest loans. These donations are made by individuals, churches, corporations, and foundations. Construction work is a co-operative effort involving volunteers, and buyers of the homes. Habitat then sells the home to the selected family at NO PROFIT. The buyer pays back the total cost of the home, usually over a 20 year mortgage period, at NO INTEREST. Payment are channeled back to a fund that helps build homes for new families. Our building committee helps families construct their own homes. These homes are a modest (1,000 to 1,100 sq. ft.), well built, and energy efficient. The average cost of a Habitat home and building lot is $70,000. We are able to keep cost low because of Habitat supporters who donate time, labor, materials, land and money.
