Qualifying Information Humboldt
Habitat for Humanity QUALIFYING INFORMATION Humboldt Habitat for Humanity (HHfH) is a faith based organization that builds houses with volunteer labor and sells them at no profit and without interest to low income people who otherwise could not afford to own a home. Since there are more requests than there are houses, HHfH carefully considers the merits of all applications. It sets exacting criteria for selection and collects pertinent information for home ownership. Upon the recommendation of its Family Selection Committee the HHfH Board of Directors chooses persons who are eligible to buy a Habitat House. The three major criteria used to select homeowners are:
Actual Need for Housing. One must be living in substandard housing. For example, one’s current shelter may have a structural defect, a leaky roof, poor heating, or faulty plumbing. It may have inadequate space, including the number of bedrooms in relationship to the number, ages, and gender of persons living in the household. It may not be in a safe environment or neighborhood. Further, family income must be less than is necessary to provide adequate shelter. Generally, this means that adequate housing would cost more than 1/3 of the family income and that an applicant is unable to qualify for a loan from a commercial lending agency. Ability to Pay for Habitat House. While family income must be limited, it must be sufficient to make monthly payments on the loan plus pay utilities, taxes, insurance, maintenance, and repairs on the home. This means that the family income of the applicant should be within the minimum and maximum limits in the Income Guideline Table:

Maximum=Minimum x 150% Since the amount of outstanding debt may affect a family’s ability to pay, HHfH will request a credit report on each applicant that meets the other selection criteria. Each applicant must meet the sweat equity requirement of 500 hours of work on actual construction, painting, cleaning, providing food for volunteers, or other activities approved by HHfH such as telephoning, organizing, keeping records, and running errands for the organization. Willingness to partner. Applicants must exhibit sincere desire and high motivation for home ownership and be willing and able to accept its responsibilities in partnership with Habitat.
